The literal translation of "ja ban bae" (呷飯未 / 吃飯沒) is "have you eaten yet?"
Back in the days, life was tough and people often did not have enough to eat. Asking whether somebody had a meal yet was the way to show that you care about their well-being. Today, it is still widely used as a general greeting, especially when receiving guests at home.
It is with this same care that we ask you - "Ja ban bae? "
