Join Chef Ann for a Lao New Year Celebration featuring a 5 course Gai Noi preview menu and cocktail pairing from Nick Kosevich, CEO of Earl Giles Bottling Company and beverage consultant for Gai Noi.
Lao New Year or Boun Pi Mai falls in mid April and lasts 3 to 4 days, although in some locations it may last for a week or longer. It marks the beginning of a new solar year as the sun enters Aries and comes close to the Vernal Equinox. The dates that Boun Pi Mai takes place are heavily influenced by the ancient Hindu calendar, although today in Laos it is very much a Buddist festival, during which statues of the Buddha are cleansed with water to wash away the past year; people also wash themselves and others with water as a way of welcoming the new year. The following days are filled with traditions such as visiting monasteries to hear services from the monks, the Miss New Year Beauty Pageant, viewing sacred images of the Buddha, and procession of the monks.
We look forward to celebrating with you!
