In a well-known anecdote, after inviting Steve Carrington to sit in on a performance at New York’s renowned Blue Note, the legendary Chick Corea advised him to “Keep that big, beautiful smile and that big, beautiful sound.” Indeed, the vibrant, full-bodied sound that emerges from Carrington’s saxophone is singularly remarkable—at once old-school and avant-garde. From his childhood in East Baltimore to his tour of duty in the United States Army, from his dedicated musicianship to his medical scholarship, Carrington’s lifetime of varied experiences yield a signature musical style that is dynamic, powerful, and deeply spiritual. The depth of his interpretation, the confidence in his approach, and his rich, expressive tone all conspire to stir the soul.
Mentored by jazz heavyweight Kenny Garrett, Carrington has played with more musical luminaries than we could list here—and his own quintet comprises an absolute all-star cast of players, including Carrington on tenor and soprano saxophones, EWI; Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, flugelhorn; Cyrus Chestnut on piano; John Lee on bass; and Christopher Brown on drums.
