Kick off DesignTO Exhibit: Biophilia with its official Launch Party, featuring artist Mad Cutter with music by Em Shera, drinks and canapes. Dress up in your favourite black and white outfit or costume to see and be seen. Ticket includes passed canapes and bubbly.
Mad Cutter’s founder, Nathalie Kraemer, explores biophilia using the traditional artform of paper cutting. “Biophilia” is a term coined by psychoanalyst Erich Fromm who depicts humans innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. With advancements in digital technology, human connectivity should be at an all time high but we discovered through the global experience of the pandemic lockdown how crucial it is to socialize in person and go outside into nature for our mental health and physical well-being.
Inspired by her recent trip to the Yucatan, Nathalie implements the Mexican jungle and animals, and Ontario wildlife in her pensive showcases by combining paper cutouts, real plants, and light to create impactful shadow art.
Hand-cutting three installations for the fine dining restaurant Ration: Beverley, Nathalie is juxtaposing our addiction to technological gadgets with our biological urge for human touch and Mother Nature.
