Established in 1982, Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before harvest, and that superior grape growing allows our winemakers to craft wines of exceptional varietal expression and finesse. This ethos remains unwavering as the winery continues to build upon its established legacy of exemplary Pinot Noir.
Tony Soter has demonstrated a genius in crafting award winning wine over his four decades of innovative winegrowing; A dedication and reverence to the purity and intrinsic nature of the craft; a mastery is revealed in his artful ability to allow character of the place to resonate in the wines; a reflection of both the land and the hand.
Featuring Senior Winemaker: Jon Priest
He might be the only winemaker to run 100 miles in one day over the Sierras, and then do it again, riding his horse, Merlin. His style as a winemaker is to work closely with his viticulture team, bringing real meaning to the elegant notion that wines are made not in the winery, but in the vineyard. He offers boots covered in fine vineyard dust as evidence. He’s surely earned his reputation as one of the most accomplished winemakers in California, with a special touch for Pinot Noir, although he’s made wine from at least 50 different varieties (although Pinot Noir holds the top spot in his personal cellar).
