South Africa is home to some of the most breathtaking terroirs in the world. More than 300 years ago, the Dutch introduced winemaking to the land that merges the Indian and Pacific Oceans. South Africa has been on a bit of a roller coaster with its winemaking: it produced Constantia in the 18th Century (then one of the world’s most famous wines), then took a dip in quality with producing bulk wine, and is now making some of the most innovative wines with the help of young winemakers who are focused on sustainability and low-impact wine practices. In this class, we will talk about everything past, present, and future in the South African wine-making scene.
