The DC Supper Club - LUNCH SALON - Ft. Top Chef Alum Chef Chaz Brown
For this Lunch Salon, Chef Chaz Brown explores the connection between Black brunch traditions and Malaysian kopitiam culture—two forms of gathering shaped by food and community.
Kopitiams, Malaysian coffeeshops, have long functioned as neighborhood hubs where working class communities gathered to eat, read, talk, and connect across cultures. Black brunch carries a similar social weight, blending Sunday family traditions, African American foodways, and a modern culture of joy, kinship, and communal refuge.
Through a Malaysian-inspired brunch and storytelling, Chef Chaz brings those traditions into conversation, exploring not only what people eat, but why these gathering spaces matter—and what becomes possible when people have a place to come together.
