Chef Kristi Brown has spent over three decades in the culinary industry, starting at a café in downtown Seattle. After graduating from Seattle Culinary Academy, she founded “That Brown Girl Cooks” Catering in the mid-1990s, gaining popularity for her unique culinary style and exceptional service, especially her famous hummus. Her mantra, "Everybody Gotta Eat," led her to co-found a community kitchen, earning widespread recognition.
“Communion R&B,” a culinary venture by Chef Kristi and her son Damon Bomar, opened its doors in Seattle's Central District. The restaurant, which has been praised by Conde Nast Traveler and The New York Times, is a testament to Chef Kristi's innovative approach to cooking. Their 'Seattle Soul' cuisine, a unique blend of Southern flavors and the city's diverse immigrant influences, has been a hit. A standout dish, the Po 'mi, is a perfect example of this diverse culinary narrative, fusing a Bahn Mi and Po Boy.
Communion has not only become a culinary hotspot in Seattle's Central District but also a beacon of unity and community. It celebrates the neighborhood's rich heritage, Chef Kristi's impact on the culinary landscape has not gone unnoticed. In 2021, she was recognized as one of Seattle Magazine's influential figures and an Emerging Chef Semifinalist for the James Beard Awards. Her influence was further acknowledged by the Puget Sound Business Journal, naming her one of the Women of Influence 2022. Her commitment to community-building continues to be celebrated, as evidenced by her nomination for the Northwest Best Chef award at the 2024 James Beard Awards and Communion's inclusion in USA Today’s Best Restaurant List 2024. Chef Kristi's culinary passion, community dedication, and unique style inspire aspiring chefs globally.
