On May 24, 1976 the Parisian wine school L'Académie du Vin organized a wine tasting that was the first of its kind, and forever changed the perception and trajectory for American wines. At the suggestion of American-born Patricia Gallagher – who was running the school at the time, the school’s founder, Steven Spurrier organized a tasting of Californian and French wines. They were able to recruit the most prestigious figures in fine wine to evaluate the wines blind (not knowing which wine was which) so as to prevent bias. To the shock of the wine world, the mostly unknown American wineries held their own. Several wines beat out the most heralded wines of Europe, names like Château Montelena, Clos du Val, Stags Leap and Heitz. Coming out on top, suddenly California wines had commanded consideration on the world stage, radically changing the trajectory of California wines thereafter.
In the spirit of this historic wine moment, and July 4th, join us in a fun tasting of 6 wines, French and American. We will review how to blind taste, you will get to rate the wines, and we will see who comes out on top. Light snacks will be served.
