Join us for a class delving into the intricacies of skin-contact wine—with an Australian focus! We are lucky to have in-house Jonathan Ross and Jane Lopes from Legend Imports, as well as the brilliant minds behind Granite Belt winery La Petite Mort, joining us all the way from Queensland, Australia.
Heard of orange wine? No, it’s not made from oranges – it describes the color that white wine gets when the grapes are left in contact with their skins for an extended period of time (why you’ll also hear this style referred to as skin-contact or skin-macerated wine). This is an ancient style, and one that has had a resurgence in recent years, with styles ranging from golden, bright numbers to rust-colored, tannic, wild wines.
La Petite Mort’s Glen Robert, Robert Richter, and Andrew Scott specialize in skin-contact wine made in Qvevri, an underground clay vessel that originated in Georgia. Their wines see some of the longest skin-contact of any wines in the world! They’ll help us break down the ins and outs of this style, as we taste through five Australian orange wines (including two of theirs), as well as benchmark wines from Georgia and Friuli, Italy.
