While many wineries have come and gone in Napa Valley, Freemark Abbey has been a staple vineyard in Nappy Valley through the years. This historical and significant winery was founded in 1886 by Josephine Tychson, one of the first female winemakers on record in the California wine industry. She founded one of Napa Valley’s original 13 wineries in St. Helena and became the first woman in her state to oversee the building of a winery and was one of the first few vintners.
The property was renamed Freemark Abby in 1939, after it was purchased by Charles Freeman, Mark Foster, and Abbey Ahern. In 1967 a group of Napa Valley grape growers formed a partnership to purchase the winery; in 2006, Jackson Family Wines became a part of this partnership. This group of winemakers catapulted Freemark Abby Winery to the national stage when it was selected as one of the 12 American wineries to represent the country in the prestigious Paris Tasting of 1976. Today, Freemark Abbey produces distinct single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Bordeaux varietals wines.
