It’s not easy moving multiple loads of tables and chairs up a freight elevator onto a 12-story rooftop farm—but the view makes it more than worth it. Brooklyn Grange, with its commanding panorama of the Manhattan skyline, was co-founded in April 2010 by Ben Flanner, Anastasia Plakias, and Gwen Schantz. Using personal savings, loans, and initial investors, they planted seeds despite the skepticism that surrounded the project. Shortly after getting started, Outstanding in the Field set its first rooftop table here in 2011—and we’ve returned ever since.
Today, Brooklyn Grange operates the world’s largest rooftop soil farms across three buildings in the city, providing roughly 80,000 pounds of organic vegetables each year to the New York community. If the sun is shining, we might witness a Stonehenge-like moment: for a brief period in late summer, the setting sun streams between Manhattan’s skyscrapers straight down the middle of the table. Inevitably, this awe-inspiring spectacle draws everyone to their feet to take in the view before dessert arrives.
Joining us on the rooftop field kitchen is guest chef Mavis-Jay Sanders, Culinary Director of Community Kitchen NYC and a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award recipient whose work has helped redefine what hospitality can look like when rooted in community. Drawing inspiration from the farm's abundant harvest and her deep commitment to equitable food systems, chef Mavis-Jay will help shape an evening that celebrates not only exceptional ingredients, but the connections that grow around the table.
