This tasting is all about something we don’t get to do very often: open wines that have already had years to evolve in the bottle.
At the center of the evening is Sangiovese, Tuscany’s defining red grape — known for its bright cherry fruit, lively acidity, savory character and remarkable ability to develop complexity with age.
Rather than tasting current releases, we’re reaching back into the cellar with wines from 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2019, giving us the opportunity to see what happens as youthful fruit begins to evolve into layers of dried cherry, herbs, earth, leather, spice and other secondary characteristics.
One of the highlights will be a side-by-side look at Mazzei Mix 36 Sangiovese from 2013 and 2015. Mix 36 is a unique expression of 100% Sangiovese created from 36 different biotypes of the grape — making the two-vintage comparison an incredible way to experience how vintage and bottle age can shape the exact same wine.
We’ll also taste Boscarelli Il Nocio 2018, a single-vineyard, 100% Sangiovese expression from Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, alongside Belguardo Tirrenico 2019, a Cabernet-led coastal Tuscan blend that gives us a completely different perspective on what Tuscany can produce.
