Hourglass is a Napa Valley estate winery built around two distinctive vineyards and a deep belief in the importance of place. Its story began in 1976, when Ned Smith acquired a small property just north of St. Helena at the narrowest point of Napa Valley, where the surrounding mountains pinch the valley into an hourglass-like shape. Originally planted to Zinfandel, the vineyard was replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon in 1992 after its rocky Hambright soils and unique geography were recognized as particularly well suited to the variety. The site became the Hourglass Vineyard, a four-acre estate whose Cabernet Sauvignon established the winery’s reputation.
In 2006, the family expanded with the acquisition of the Blueline Vineyard near Calistoga, a 20-acre estate planted to all five red Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The two vineyards offer distinctly different expressions of Napa Valley, shaped by their soils, exposures, and cooling influences. Together, they form the foundation of Hourglass and its focus on estate-grown Bordeaux varietals with depth, structure, freshness, and a strong expression of site.
Hourglass approaches winemaking as a balance of art and science, tradition and innovation. Under winemaker Tony Biagi, the focus is on precision in both the vineyard and cellar, building wines around structure while preserving vitality, aromatics, and the individual character of each estate. The result is a distinctly Napa expression of Bordeaux varietals—powerful and polished, but driven by balance and a sense of place.
