Paco Winery is the newest chapter in winemaker Tyler Russell’s more than two-decade career in Paso Robles. After moving west from New York in his early twenties, Tyler developed his craft at several Paso Robles wineries, including Dover Canyon, JUSTIN, Zenaida, and Calcareous, before creating his own projects, Nelle and Cordant. Paco brings that experience together into a deeply personal project rooted in Paso Robles and Tyler’s belief that wine should be expressive, honest, and made without pretense.
Working from his winery in Paso Robles’ Tin City, Tyler sources fruit from vineyards stretching from cooler coastal appellations to the limestone-rich soils of Paso Robles. Rhône varietals are central to the Paco collection, with wines built around Grenache and Syrah, alongside blends such as Rite of Passage, a traditional Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre blend. The portfolio also ventures beyond the Rhône with a small-production Chardonnay, reflecting Tyler’s willingness to make wines based on the vineyards and varieties that inspire him rather than following a rigid formula.
Paco embraces a decidedly unpretentious approach to wine. The project is meant to be creative, personal, and a little unconventional—serious about what is in the bottle without taking the culture surrounding wine too seriously. The result is a collection of expressive, small-production wines that showcase both Tyler Russell’s perspective as a winemaker and the diversity of California’s Central Coast.
