Come enjoy unlimited tea service at the current Tea House before our move, try food from Mabuhay Austin's al a carte tea infused menu, and celebrate our founder, So-Han's birthday! A message from him below:
On July 14 I turn 41.
This is a significant birthday for many reasons. It is the only time in my life when my age will be the reverse of my birth date, which some people call a platinum birthday (as opposed to my golden birthday when I turned 14). It is also my first birthday where the amount of my life that I’ve been practicing gong fu cha exceeds the amount of my life when I haven’t - I started in the spring of my 20th year. But most significantly it is the last birthday I’m going to celebrate at West China Tea’s current location at 4706 N I35.
As you may know, our beloved tea house is in the path of the expansion of Interstate 35. On September 1st the property passes into the possession of Texas Department of Transit to be demolished. This place is much more than a building - it’s practically been my home for the past 7 years, the place where I met the love of my life, where the business and the community have grown and flourished, where we’ve filmed Tea House Ghost, and of course the site of hundreds of epic parties and gatherings.
On July 20 we’re going to have my final birthday party at this location, and take the opportunity to bid a bittersweet farewell to the space that has served us so faithfully. Please join us in celebrating not only my birthday but the end of an era of Austin’s tea culture, and the beginning of a new chapter.
