Please join us as we welcome Chas Lum, Executive Bourbon Steward, to wineLAIR. This tasting is a sampling of some of the best and rarest bourbons Kentucky has to offer. Chas Lum will take you on a tasting journey of each, explaining the rich history of both the distilleries and each brand sampled.
Our final bourbon tasting of the year will feature six wheated, award-winning, rare bourbons and whiskeys.
Wheated bourbon has skyrocketed in popularity and is sought after for its softer, sweeter and nuanced expression. In addition to a well-rounded sampling of rare bourbons 8-17 years of age, the flight includes two bourbons named after the founders of the wheated bourbon movement, Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle and William Larue Weller. These expressions have roots in the 1800s but continue to shape the modern bourbon industry. The 2018 expression of William Larue Weller was regarded by renowned bourbon critic Fredd Minnick as “one of the best bourbons of the century”.
Chas fell in love with bourbon and the rich culture behind the spirit on a Kentucky Bourbon Trail trip with friends. Since then, he has professionalized his hobby and was recently inducted into Stave and Thief Society after earning an accreditation as an Executive Bourbon Steward. Chas now brings his knowledge, passion and “snobbery-free” enthusiasm to each and every event he hosts.
Representing 'Virginia Bourbon Lovers', one of the region's largest barrel picking groups, in the last two years Chas and other fellow founders of the group have hand-selected more than 15 barrels from U.S. and KY distilleries such as Buffalo Trace, Barton, Heaven Hill, Makers Mark and Four Roses.
