The Advocats Big Band was formed over 30 years ago by a group of young lawyers from Osgoode Hall Law School to perform for a local fundraiser. Now, in 2025, the band includes many top professional musicians and music educators whose individual experience ranges from studio,
theatre, film and television work to major symphony orchestra, chamber music and night club.
The Advocats have performed for various charitable causes and at numerous venues in the GTA , including The Rex Hotel, Old Mill Toronto, The Beaches International Jazz Festival and Smokeshow BBQ & Brew (formerly the Chick’n’deli). Their first-Monday-of-the-month performance tradition, currently hosted by The Duke Toronto, has continued for over 20 years!
The Advocats Big Band receives regular radio airplay on Glen Woodcock's Big Band Show on Jazz.FM91 and Dean Hollin’s Big Band Sunday Night on Zoomer Radio, both in Toronto. This includes tracks from their first album “In Full Swing!” released in 2020 and from their holiday album “All I Want for Christmas is…Swing!” released in 2022.
The Advocats attract a large following of loyal fans, eager to hear a broad repertoire including many of the swinging classics of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra as well as music from present-day talents like Michael Bublé, the New York Voices and Norah Jones.
