Alta Colina is a family-owned estate winery located in the Adelaida District on the westside of Paso Robles. Founded by the Tillman family in 2003, the winery takes its name from the Spanish words for “high hill,” a fitting reference to its elevated estate vineyard, which rises to nearly 1,800 feet above sea level in the rugged hills of western Paso Robles.
The estate is dedicated to Rhône varieties, with Syrah at the heart of the vineyard alongside Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. The vineyard’s elevation, steep slopes and fractured shale soils combine with Paso Robles’ warm, sunny days and dramatic nighttime cooling to create an ideal environment for these varieties. The resulting wines show the depth and generosity associated with Paso Robles while retaining freshness, structure and savory complexity.
From farming through winemaking, Alta Colina takes a thoughtful, hands-on approach focused on expressing the character of its estate vineyard. Rather than chasing a single house style, the wines are intended to reflect their varieties, individual vineyard blocks and vintages. The result is a distinctive collection of Rhône-inspired wines that offers an exciting look at what can be achieved from one of Paso Robles’ most compelling high-elevation sites.
