WABUNKA series : Shakyo (写経) - Japanese Calligraphy with Tea and Sweets
Shakyo (写経)
Japanese Calligraphy with Tea and Sweets
A quiet moment of mindfulness through brush and ink.
Join us for a Shakyo (写経) workshop, a traditional Buddhist practice of tracing sacred sutras
by hand. Guided by Tomoko Hetherington, a Japanese brush calligraphy instructor, this
workshop offers a peaceful space to slow down, focus, and connect with centuries-old tradition.
Participants will trace approximately 300 characters from the Hannya Shingyo (般若心経,
Heart Sutra) using brush and ink. Those who wish may also try the Hokke-kyō (法華経, Lotus
Sutra).
No prior experience is required. Gentle, step-by-step guidance is provided, and all materials are
included. Enjoy premium Japanese green tea and traditional sweets during the session.
