Let’s write Seal Script (篆書): Ancient in Origin, Modern in Design
A local Japanese brush calligraphy instructor, Tomoko Hetherington, hosts a workshop.
Seal script is one of the oldest styles of Chinese characters, with a history stretching back nearly three thousand years. Its free-flowing, mysterious forms, reminiscent of pictographs, are part of its unique appeal. Surprisingly, its use of line, space, balance, and stylization also connects naturally with modern logos and typography.
In this workshop, we will explore the history of seal script and discover the pleasure of seeing characters not only as something to “read,” but also as visual forms. After practicing the basic techniques, participants will create their own seal-script calligraphy on a shikishi paper.
All materials you need will be provided.
• 1 shikishi (calligraphy paper mounted to a cardboard backing) 10”x 10.75” or 25cm x 27cm
• Samples
• Shodo practice papers, sumi-ink
• 1 calligraphy brush
• Step-by-step Instruction
Japanese tea and sweets will be served.
